Weta Workshop have named the New Zealand winner of the inaugural Incheon City Concept Design Competition. In first place is Ziyi Zheng from the University of Auckland, with runner-up Andrew Noble, from the Ara Institute of Canterbury, and third place going to Michael Vaughan of the YooBee School of Design, Christchurch.
She’ll keep you safe. Or will she? Following its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, sci-fi thriller I Am Mother has come to Netflix. Directed by Grant Sputore, with screenplay by Michael Lloyd Green, the film tells the story of a robot (“Mother”) designed to repopulate the earth after the extinction of humankind. Mother is performed by an actor wearing a complex specialty suit, designed and built by the award-winning concept design and manufacturing facility, New Zealand’s Weta Workshop.
Among 147 designers from 17 countries, a dazzling creation took the stage at last year’s World of Wearable Art Awards (WOW). Spirit Bone, crafted by Chinese designer Xiaotong Guo, shone in the Reflective Surfaces section at the 30th anniversary of the international design competition, earning its maker the Weta Workshop Emerging Designer Award. As part of her prize, Xiaotong travelled from China to join Weta Workshop for a four-week internship in March.

Hailed as “China’s first full-scale interstellar spectacular” (The Hollywood Reporter), The Wandering Earth has launched in cinemas worldwide. Directed by Frant Gwo, the film adapts Hugo Award-winning author Liu Cixin’s story about a desperate mission to save a doomed Earth. To prepare for lift-off, New Zealand’s Weta Workshop manufactured a series of suits equipped with highly technical exoskeletons, domed helmets, and specialty backpacks.
Hold onto your rayguns. Weta Workshop’s gaming division has been announced as a finalist in both the VES and D.I.C.E. Awards. The ground-breaking sci-fi game, Dr. Grordbort’s Invaders, available exclusively on Magic Leap, was released in 2018 and has been heralded as ushering in a new era of gaming.
On Sunday, Weta Workshop’s world-famous tourism hub, retail store, and mini museum opened its doors to celebrate ten years in business – heralded by the proverbial popping of corks and the very real munching of cake.
