Weta Publishing has created a new breed of books focused on celebrating the creative process.
We design beautifully crafted, visually stunning books that tell the stories of the artists and technicians who work within the film and entrainment industries. Our passion for telling these wonderful stories through publishing was born out of our love of working on projects that we have been lucky enough to be involved with over the years.
How we work
The Weta publishing team provides services from concept, editorial, layout design, print production and can manage the process all the way through to distribution. We have established strong relationships with publishers and distributors worldwide.
Some of our highlights
Over the last three years we have sold over a half of a million copies. Some of our book highlights include titles such as The Art of the Adventures of Tintin, The Art of District 9, The World of Kong: A Natural History of Skull Island (King Kong), The Crafting of Narnia and The Hobbit Chronicles. We are currently working on The Hobbit Chronicles series. Over 250,000 copies of the first book were printed. The books are translated into five languages as well as English and distributed world-wide. Over 250,000 copies of the first book were printed and an average of 100,000 copies of subsequent Chronicles have been printed. The books are translated into five languages as well as English and distributed world-wide. The first Hobbit Chronicle An Unexpected Journey : Art & Design featured on the New York Times bestseller list. In addition to print books, Weta Publishing has explored ground breaking digital products which offer the reader the opportunity for a greatly enhanced experience including e-books and apps. An example of this is The Art of the Adventures of Tintin application which includes exclusive interactive elements.

This 3D performance-capture film, based on the universally popular series of books The Adventures of Tintin by Hergé, is directed by Steven Spielberg, and produced by Peter Jackson and Kathleen Kennedy.

The Art of District 9: Weta Workshop
Written and directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson District 9 was one of the most successful movies of 2009 and was nominated for 4 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Through hundreds of conceptual illustrations and sculptures The Art of District 9: Weta Workshop tells the story of Weta Workshop’s involvement in designing the guns, the aliens, the vehicles, the graphic language of this unique film and how the creative team worked closely with Neill Blomkamp to realise his vision. Weta: The Collector's Guide includes an Introduction from multi Academy Award winning Richard Taylor, whose incredible passion has inspired this decade of collectible creativity. The book is designed and written by Daniel Falconer, Weta Workshop conceptual designer, part time sculptor and passionate collector.
The World of Kong, A Natural History of Skull Island
Weta launched its publishing arm with The World of Kong, A Natural History of Skull Island, published in conjunction with Pocket Books and tied into Peter Jackson's King Kong.
Written and illustrated by Weta Workshop's creative team, the same designers responsible for the movie's creatures, The World of Kong catalogues the amazing wildlife of King Kong's fictitious island home like a comprehensive field guide.

Written and designed by the artists of Weta and published by HarperCollins, The Crafting of Narnia chronicles the stunning concept drawings, designs and props that helped shape the world of Narnia for the screen.
With detailed photography, hundreds of never-before-seen drawings and sculptures and commentary from the artists and craftspeople of the workshop, discover the intricate work and exhaustive research that went into each idea, prop and weapon conceived at Weta Workshop for the first two instalments of the saga in the Disney movies The Chronicles Of Narnia, The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe and Prince Caspian.
