Your journey begins with a trip to Weta Workshop in Miramar. Here, you’ll discover how imaginary worlds are brought to life through physical effects and movie-making magic. From your favourite films to larger-than-life exhibitions: join the Weta Cave Workshop Tour to learn about our artistry and craftsmanship for The Lord of the Rings, the record-breaking Gallipoli: The scale of our war and more! On the Miniatures Stage Tour, wander through monumental miniature environments and learn how miniatures were constructed for the popular television show, Thunderbirds Are Go.
Return to the city to spend the afternoon steeped in Māori culture. Arrive at your first site of cultural significance: Te Wharewaka o Pōneke. This iconic canoe (waka) house on Wellington’s waterfront is a contemporary rendition of a traditional Māori Pā (village). It is also home to Karaka Café, where you’ll experience the best of Aotearoa’s cuisine for lunch. A short walk away, visit an excavation site and view the archaeological remains at Te Aro Pā: a 180-year-old Pā site that was unearthed in 2005. Your guide, a representative of local iwi (tribe) will share Māori history, the origins of the village and the development of its people, Te Ātiawa/Taranaki Whānui.
After a whirlwind tour of Wellington, you may find yourself suddenly inspired to pick up a paintbrush or practice a few words of te reo (Māori language).
