After working on the 2022 horror film M3GAN, we had the pleasure of helping bring director Gerard Johnstone’s vision to life again for M3GAN 2.0. The world of this murder machine is as techy as it is fashion-forward, so this time we were tasked with imagining an exoskeleton — a sleek, high-gloss suit that, in the film, would assist its wearer with physical tasks.

For the character Gemma played by Allison Williams, the suit required a careful balance: a slick silhouette that would sit tight to her body (a protagonist in a horror needs to be agile, after all) while also making her look formidable. In other words, it needed to be a wearable product and convincingly resemble an enhanced soldier. Our artists achieved this by exploring options inspired by modern product design with a fashionable, consumer-friendly aesthetic — suits that sported machine finishes and prominent, quarterback-like shoulders.

As a concept by our Design Studio neared its final form, our manufacture team set out to make the suit a real-life costume. Featuring a ‘spine’ and tendon-like elements, the exoskeleton was made to be form-fitting but also achieve a comfortable range of motion for high-action stunts and combat scenes. With the right materials, methodologies and some integrated lighting, we created two suits for two different performers to pack a (safe) punch.
