Welcome to the wonderfully messy world of practical effects. Roll up your sleeves and craft your very own miniature fantasy hut - the kind of small but mighty dwelling you could imagine tucked deep in an enchanted forest or battered on the edge of a battlefield. This isn’t arts and crafts; it’s cinematic worldbuilding, scaled down and made hands-on.
Guided by our crew, you’ll cut, shape and sculpt with simple but versatile materials like cardboard, foil and collected treasures. Then the real storytelling begins - layering in paint, texture and weathering to give your hut a narrative. Is it moss-covered and magical? Crumbling and cursed? Or aged in legend? You decide, and we’ll show you the techniques to make it happen.
Along the way, you’ll pick up professional finishing tricks - dry brushing, grime washing, scenic dressing - the same techniques used to make film miniatures look like they’ve stood for centuries. By the end, you won’t just have a pint-sized piece of fantasy real estate to take home, you’ll also earn a Certificate of Creativity (and bragging rights that you’ve dabbled in the art of movie magic).
Everything you need to create your fantasy world a truly believable environment will be provided.
Our creative workshops cater to small groups to allow for one-on-one learning with our crew.

For public transport options, please visit the Auckland Transport website.
The eternal question for intergalactic travellers! While we currently don’t offer dedicated spacecraft parking, we do have plenty of terrestrial car parking options at SkyCity. If your craft is taller than 2.1 metres or has a cloaking device, we recommend teleporting down.
We also offer SkyCity parking validation for anyone who purchases a tour, creative workshop or spends over $49 on retail in the Wētā Cave. Validation will reduce the hourly rate of parking.

You will be painting your miniature, so just in case, don't wear anything you don't want to get messy!
Our creative workshops are suitable for children aged 12 years and above.
Some
materials used throughout our tour and workshops may trigger allergic reactions in some
guests. These materials include latex, silicone and foam. Please email us if
you have any questions.
Yes, we have rentable lockers available for you to store any medium to large sized bags, including suitcases, starting from $4. You can store your luggage up to 24 hours.
