In the audacious comedic fable Wicker, directed by Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, an ostracized fisherwoman commissions a husband from the local basketmaker. But her unexpected romance with the intricate creation sparks jealousy and threatens the village’s social order.
Wicker’s titular character, the Wicker Husband, was designed and created by Wētā Workshop. To bring the unusual groom to life, we created a fully practical fabricated suit and full facial prosthetic makeup, worn by actor Alexander Skarsgård. Our team used innovative new materials and processes developed at our Workshop, with Wicker’s practical effects led by Wētā Workshop Prosthetic Makeup Designer Joe Dunckley and application by Lead Makeup Effects Artist Sarah Rubano.
In fact, in most shots in the film, there isn't any CGI. Sound design and a small amount of visual effects (VFX) added the clever finishing touches for specific moments in the film, such as the addition of points of light shining through the weave, to show he’s hollow.
From early concept design all the way to on set, we were thrilled to bring the Wicker Husband to life, something that took many hands and many strands. Wicker is in theatres in the US October 23 (expanding October 30), in Australia November 26, and New Zealand January 7.
