First take our 90-minute guided tour
Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Avatar and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.
You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.
Children 6 to 11 years must be accompanied by an adult.
Creative workshop
Then craft your own creature at our Monster Makers Workshop
Roll up your sleeves and grab your sculpting tools - it's time to bring a beast to life! In this 60-minute workshop, our crew will show you how to take a lump of clay and turn it into something with teeth.
What you'll learn
Real sculpting techniques, taught by our crew and used by the artists who bring creatures to life for the big screen:
How to build a 3D creature – your hands will be covered in clay and you’ll love it!
How to add texture, so a smooth surface turns into scales, spikes or slime
How to sculpt the ‘good’ scary bits – claws, fangs, horns
How to think like a creature designer – where does it lurk? What does it eat?
Make a monster, or make a monster mob
Monsters like company. Bring your friends or whānau, and at the end you can gather your creatures up together into one glorious, gruesome mob that nobody else in this world could have made.
Your monster comes home with you!
No experience needed, all tools and materials provided.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. Parents and guardians are FREE.
"This. Is. A. Must. Do. What an incredible company to get insight into — they way they make art is unparalleled and the tour is fantastic. So much amazing information about many amazing movies!"

"This fulfilled a childhood dream to see how the magic of The LOTR was made! My tour guide was not just knowledgeable and excited about the subject, but also a proud part of the magic himself! In my workshop I learned amazing skills taught by someone who was just as passionate about his craft—and that came through!" |
