Wētā Workshop wāhine: From prosthetics to molding, discover what it’s like to work at our Workshop

At Wētā Workshop, no two days look the same. In fact, very little does: Our projects span clients and continents, from blockbuster films to unforgettable immersive experiences, and our crew join us from all over the world, each with different backgrounds and skills.
Senior Molding Technician Judith Dillon, Head of Prosthetics Karyoon Kim and Junior Product Manager Franki Tate may work in very different corners of our Workshop, yet they each continue to inspire and drive our Workshop forward through their shared creativity, tenacity and expertise. They’re pretty cool, too.
Below, meet these three Wētā Workshop wāhine and learn more about their roles, their projects and what it’s really like to work in our Wellington Workshop.
Judith Dillon
Senior Molding Technician
What does it take to be a mold maker? Being a “wizard of the dark arts”, says Judith Dillon, a Senior Technician in Molding who joined Wētā Workshop over a decade ago, “with a little bit of Dr. Seuss thrown in”.
Some days, Judith works on small, intricate set-ups. On others, she’s climbing inside of a mold to fibreglass parts of it for a large-scale figure. The job, she says, means being inside, outside and upside down; always thinking three steps ahead and back to front.
Watch to learn more about what it’s like on our Workshop floor, and discover a day in the life of the messy, shapeshifting, time-twisting world of mold making.
Karyoon Kim
Head of Prosthetics
When Head of Prosthetics Karyoon Kim isn’t carrying (fake) severed limbs around in cardboard boxes, she’s creative problem-solving: overseeing her team, planning projects and keeping productions moving smoothly.
Since joining Wētā Workshop in 2018, Karyoon has brought her extraordinary skills to everything from colossal film projects (including Alien: Romulus, Predator: Badlands, Avatar and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) to colossal figures (such as the giant, nine-metre-tall sculptures at the heart of Expo 2020 Dubai’s Alif: The Mobility Pavilion).
Watch to learn more about what it’s like on our Workshop floor, and step inside Karyoon’s vast prosthetics universe.
Franki Tate
Junior Product Manager
Whether it’s a premium statue or a beautiful art card, Junior Product Manager Franki Tate helps bring our collectibles into the hands of fans around the world.
She’s a whiz with a spreadsheet and a wellspring of new ideas. On any given day in our Consumer Products team, Franki is bringing together business strategy and creativity. Sometimes she’s deep analysing data, and other times she’s improving our systems and figuring out how to make something as cool as possible.
Watch to learn more about Franki’s journey at our Workshop, from Tourism to Paint to Consumer Products, back to Paint, to Production, to Reception, and back to Consumer Products (phew!).
