With 52 episodes sold to over 130 countries after its debut in 2009, The WotWots children’s television show owed its success to its transferability. In the show, two fluffy aliens — blue, pink and puppet-like — visit Earth to learn about our planet’s diverse animal world, speaking in varying “what’s” and engaging with an unseen narrator who could be translated into any language.
Created and developed by children’s book author Martin Baynton in collaboration with Wētā Workshop cofounders Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger via the production company Pūkeko Pictures, the series’ cute characters DottyWot and SpottyWot ventured to the zoo, the beach and beyond in their steampunk spaceship. Its spinoff series, Kiddets, began airing in 2018.
